Abstract     Injury to the spinal column accompanied by an acute spinal cord lesion (SCI), is condition cippling to patient, his(her) family and society and ussually meaning lifelong dependancy on other people Clinical and experimental surveys shoved, that considerable damage to spinal cord happens after the initial blow, due to the secondary events taking place at the traumatized level. Wishing to finc the way to prevent that, there were several trials utilizing many substances. Most prominent of therr were the NASCIS (North American Spinal Cord Injury Study) studies. Based on the recommendations by this studies, the Metilprednisolone (MS) infusions became the standard of care in our country too! In Northern America proffesional academies(i.e. AAOS) cautiously avoided direct reccomendations ot this therapy. Following the initial publications of the results, there were several ctitiques of the design of the studies. Later (especially after year 2000) there were more publications renouncing the favourable effects of the MS infusions. Some surveys shoved, that many physicians utilize this therapy mainly because offear being sued. Since there are several other surveys experimenting with other substances (erytropoetin, cytokines COX-2 inhibitors, etc.) perhaps there is time to survey the data again and to reconsider the use o MS.
