Abstract | Atrial fibrillation is the most common rhythm disturbance present in the internistic emergency department. Because of the paroxysms of atrial fibrillation we have treated 10% of all hospitalized patients in 24-hour hospital of internistic emergency department in University Medical Center Ljubljana. Atrial fibrillation is usually a consequence of heart disease and its sign or symptom, Sometimes arrhythmia can in itself be basic disease, while it can also appear in otherwise healthy heart. Patients with paroxysmal form of arrhythmia have rhythm disturbances in forms of attacks. Treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation depends on the stage and the duration of arrhythmia, hemodynamic stability of the patient, basic heart disease and other aceompanying disease: Atrial fibrillation can be treated with drugs, synchronized electrical cardioversion or combination of both. Treatment with parenteral application of antiarrhythmics and/or electricity is possible only in the intensive care unit, with constant monitoring of arterial pressure and ECG. Equipment and organization of medical work in 24-hour hospital enables treatment of all patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, who have been ambulatory examined. Establishment of the 24-hour hospital of internistic emergency department in University Medical Center Ljubljana decreased the need for hospital admission and hospital treatment of patients with arrhythmias. We will present approaches and efficiency of different types of arrhythmia treatment in patients with recurrent paroxysmal atrial fibrillation who have been treated in 24-hour hospital in University Medical Center Ljubljana. | |
