Abstract     Within Public Health Institutes anti-rabies dispensaries are responsible for treatment of all persons harmed by or having had contact vvith rabies- infected animals (or those suspected to be infected). In this study I prospectively observed all the anti-rabies treatments performed within Public Health Institute of Ljubljana during 2001. There were 818 cases of anti-rabies treatment. Patients were either advised by their doctors to come or we called them - after we were notified by a vet who had treated an infected or questionable animal. In this study I tried to determine epidemiological characteristics of anti-rabies treatments within Ljubljana region, which covers the population of 600030. My primary interests were the following: sex and age of treated persons; month in which injuries occurred; locality and number of injuries; place where the injury happened; animal responsible for the injury; possible post-expositional anti -rabies vaccination; possible application of anti-rabies immunoglobulin; local treatment of the injury; necessity of surgical treatment; anti-tetanus protection received. What also interested me greatly was the number of people who should have been, according to law, pre-expositionally vaccinated, but were not. The study included 818 people, 454 males and 364 females. Children up to age 15 represented 31,3% of all cases. The anti-rabies treatments were most frequent in July and October, but there was no evidence pointing to seasonal occurrence. The injuries of lower extremities were most frequent, followed by injuries of upper extremities, trunk, head and neck. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
