Abstract     A very intensive period of nuclear raw material research and of production of uranium concentrate in Slovenia began and ended in the last half century. Uranium was discovered in 1947 in the mines in Idrija, and later in some other mines, especially in young Palaeozoic sedimentary stone in the surroundings of Škofja Loka. In the article all discovered radioacti ve anomalies are shown, the applied research methods are described, the chronology of the research and the main protagonists are presented. The Žirovski vrh Uranium Mine was built, reached the planned parameters, and operated safely for the people and environment. In 1990 the mine was shut down. A share of the electricity produced from the Žirovnica Uranium Mine and some other technical and organisational achievements that have remained as the lasting heritage of this program are described as well.
