Abstract     This master's degree work starts with the earlier history of pharmacies in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy with particular emphasis on changes in the socioeconomic position of pharmacies, apothecaries and their associates during the period from 1850 to 1950. The background to the discussed period is provided by the analysis of development of pharmacies in Vienna in Perlach's time (especially duringhis dean-ship at the Medical Faculty of Vienna 1539) and the gradualtransition of the publicly-owned pharmacies in Creina and Carinthia, established and financed by the diets of the two duchies, into privately owned pharmacies opened to public by concession, given by the Boards of Pharmacists of the cited duchies (founded by Order and laws governing the Board of Pharmacists in Craina and Carinthia in 1834). The competition among pharmacists, the changing quality and willful pricing of medicaments was regulated by Apothecaries ordinances as early as 1517 in Vienna and consequently much later in the duchies (in the duchy of Creina in 1710). However, the administrative control was inadequate in preventing some negative practices and could not intervene against outside influences having a major impact on the socioeconomic position of pharmacies . Sudden shortage of the number of licensed pharmacists due to conscription or postwar migrations due to newly drawn borders reopened the question of women aptitude for the pharmacy employee positions respective study of pharmacy.
