Abstract     Demographic changes with increased amount of elderly people leads to increased number of elderly with renal disease. The proportion of elderly patients admitted to renal replacement therapy due to renal failure is also increasing. Glomerular diseases are one of important causes of end stage renal failure in the elderly. Even when the underlying mechanism, which caused glomerular damage, is no longer active, the renal function deteriorates. It is assumed that the mechanism of deterioration is the same in all types of renal diseases. Despite different hypothesis, which we use to explain the mechanism of progression of renal disease with, we still do not know the risk factors for renal failure and the results of clinical surveys are contradictory. Only a little is known about risk factors for end stage renal disease in the elderly with glomerular disease. The knowledge of risk factors would enable to plan a survey with drugs which would modify these factors. This would prevent or at least slow down the progression of the deterioration of renal function, improve the life quality of the elderly patients and lower the costs of renal replacement therapy. In this retrospective survey we wanted to establish, in the population of patients who were at least 60 years old and had renal biopsy between the beginning of January 1996 and the end of Decembre 2000, the most common renal and glomerular diseases, the most common clinical presentations of renal diseases and the most common indications for renal biopsy. We wanted to find the correlation between the serum creatinine and patohistological changes at the time of renal biopsy. We also wanted to establish the clinical and patohistological risk factors for end stage renal disease. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
